Yes, it would be nice. The existing rainbow tool is really not
adequate for this.

Why must it be within the diameter of the rainbow?

Yes, fading sounds fine.

I would prefer rainbow with a smooth gradient, but they don't
need to be excessively realistic (we're not trying to create a
'photo drawing' application here). A nice gradient through the
whole colour spectrum would suffice.
