This is true. However, it has been getting progressively worse for the last several months. My biggest concern is that they (VA Software/OSDN/whatever their name is at the moment) wont be able to afford to keep this up (the cracks are already showing) and one day all this free service that we depend upon will vanish. They have 62,947 projects with 636,440 users. That's a lot, and I'm sure it costs them a buttload. The thing is, VA Linux (what they used to be called) used to do quite well. But when big server manufacturers entered the Linux market (HP, IBM, etc.), VA Linux couldn't compete. So they changed their business to "software" (became VA Software). Unfortunately, I think the only thing they have thats profitable now is advertisements from their various sites (Slashdot, Freshmeat, SF.net), and speaking as someone who used to make money from advertising (on geekcomix.com) I can honestly say that you no longer can really make money from that. (The also sell a commercial version of SF.net, and, as someone who has worked with ClearCase and MS's Visual SourceSafe in the past, I can definately say I'd prefer SF over either of those. But, I doubt they make enough from that one software to keep all this up.) My vote is we continue to use SF.net because, honestly, the bandwidth that all our projects have used from them in the past would likely kill our little donated t4k.net server (rather, kill the bandwidth we share with our neighbors, the server could handle it fine). I say we use SF.net, but have a contingiousy (sp?) plan. > > I will admit though that it seems completely different from getting an update from > my logged in dev acct. You're on t4k-admin, you got the message like everyone else ;-) Actually, the box will just be moving. You shouldn't be losing anything. It just means that everything associated with t4k.net (mailing lists, email, some sites, some CVS) will go offline for a day or two. Still... I'd suggest backing up if you are as paranoid as I am ;-) -- Sam Hart University/Work addr. <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Personal addr. <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Alternative <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> end _______________________________________________ Tuxtype-dev mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://tux4kids.net/mailman/listinfo/tuxtype-dev
