Kevin may be right to extent, but Kevin ignores one important point. The nation is finding out what kind of a nightmare Sarah Palin would be as a vice president, how ill prepared she would be. They were really ready to laugh. And Fey did a great job of giving them a chance to release it. The most famous sketch, the Katie Couric interview sketch, was really just distilling what Palin did in those interviews. If you watch the actual interviews what Fey did was capture the essence. Granted, this wasn't like when Samuel L. Jackson picks up an SNL sketch and carries it on his back or when Christopher Walken goes into weird, wonderful new territory. There was a great anticipation about the sketch and they at least delivered a stand-up double if not a home run.
