Before he wrote that song (and the theme for "The Odd Couple," originally for the film version) and many other film scores, he was the man who molded the sound of the 50s and 60s Count Basie band, with several of his Basie songs becoming jazz standards, including "Little Darlin'", which was frequently used as end-of-show music by Doc Sevrinsen's band on the "Tonight Show":
