The hotly anticipated British standup debut of U.S. comedian Sarah
Silverman proved outrageous, but it wasn't her subversive, politically
incorrect comedy that drew ire.

An audience that packed into London's Hammersmith Apollo for Silverman
on Sunday night was left fuming after the provocative star delivered
an unexpectedly short set that lasted less than an hour, according to
British media.

After a performance that reportedly ran 40-45 minutes, Silverman
returned with an awkward, five-minute "encore" question-and-answer
session that failed to satisfy the assembled comedy fans, many of whom
had paid about $90 a ticket.

It didn't help that the show had also suffered technical delays early
on and that her opening act, comedian Steve Agee, had called in sick
and wasn't replaced.

Some fans who attended the show also complained that her appearance
featured no new content, but simply featured material previously seen
on Silverman's online videos or her comedy films, like Jesus is Magic.

The notoriously tough British newspaper critics blasted the comedian
in their write-ups, with "She blew it" and "Death Strikes Suddenly"
among the reviews.

Silverman, who was in town to promote the U.K. launch of her Comedy
Central show The Sarah Silverman Program, has risen in prominence in
recent years following a noteworthy appearance in the film The
Aristocrats and high-profile gigs like hosting the 2007 MTV Movie
Awards.

Earlier in 2008, she created a tongue-in-cheek music video called I'm
F---ing Matt Damon as a gift to her then-partner, late-night talk show
host Jimmy Kimmel. A massive, international success thanks to viral
distribution online, the video segment went on to pick up two Emmy
Awards in September.

Recently, Silverman has spearheaded a campaign calling fellow
Jewish-Americans and non-Jews to visit elderly relatives in key swing
states like Florida and persuade them to vote for her preferred U.S.
presidential candidate, Barack Obama.
