It's less important to what happens on "Doctor Who", but they have done an interesting job of using old Who aliens. So far, I've been able to skip most of it, though. There are plot lines (mostly involving Captain Jack) that carry back and forth from Torchwood to the mothership. It'd be a shame to miss the layers Davies put together, so i'd urge you not to skip Torchwood.
