This is of course what my folks would love to do, if there were some way
for them to get a DVR without all the unneeded HD channels and
considerable extra per-month charge.

In an unrelated story, somebody from RCN gave my father a deal normally
available to new customers... I don't know all the details, but it's a
noticeable reduction in the per-month rate, and he doesn't have to
pre-pay to get it...
