Following my own post:

It was actually a Panasonic PV4315-S (dad gave the Sony to my brother,
I think), but its tracking capability is jolly mediocre for tapes
recorded on it, and dicey for tapes recorded elsewhere.

Today in RP, Sir Tom wrote, in part:

Like I told Delfin, for the time being I'll be switching to USA's two-
Saturdays-
hence repurposing.  At least the Philips can still play tapes.
