I hope Kevin is right -- for a couple of reasons:

1. Before Christmas, I was browsing through a Bed, Bath, and Beyond
catalogue and came across an item called a "VCR 2 PC." Apparently, it
converts taped shows to electronic files, something that sounds really
desirable to me since I've been needing to do something with my tape
collection.

However, since I wasn't planning to have any spare time for such a
project for a year, I talked myself into not getting the VCR 2 PC.

But then BB&B ran a 20% off online coupon -- and I'm a sucker for
coupons.

So, I went to the BB&B website looking for the VCR 2 PC. When I
couldn't find it, I thought it was sold out. But then I clicked on
"clearance" -- and there it was -- marked down from $200 to $150 and
with a 20% off coupon and free shipping. So, I feel like I got a
bargain, I think. Except it will still be a year before I get around to
using it.

Just curious. Anyone have any experience with such a device?

2. Last night I should have checked before I tried to make a DVD of the
Vienna Philharmonic for my mother. My DVD recorder kept saying there
was no disc in the machine. Now, I'll have to investigate why it didn't
work. I really hate DVD technology: I don't understand it (especially
when I look at the files online), and I've never had a DVD player -- or
burner -- that lasted more than about a year and a half.

Will Blu-Ray really dominate the market? Picture quality not
withstanding, I hope not. My admittedly optimistic prediction is that
hard-drive technology will continue to improve (read: smaller sized
drives capable of holding increased amounts of data) and drop in price.
I'd like to think we will transition to a society of easy and affordable
downloads as opposed to another clunky format that has to be stored on a
shelf, only to be replaced by the next format.
