Unlike some people here, I really am not a militant Wiig-hater; she
can make me smile and even laugh at times (I happen to like the
A-holes). But I am continually surprised by the media drumbeat pumping
her as a comedy hall-of-famer. In this NYT piece she comes across as
nice enough, so I am going to give her the benefit of the doubt and
assume this PR blitz is not her doing and more the work of NBC and
evil comedy master Lorne Michaels. Again we get the comparisons to
Radner and Tomlin (and the implication that Wiig is just as funny as
Fey or Poheler).

Those looking for straight lines will like this: "... Ms. Wiig, who
describes herself as shy and never thought of herself as funny — still
doesn't, in some ways. "My personality, people don't — they're
surprised when I tell them that I do comedy"

I am a huge Laker fan. At best Wiig reminds me of Lamar Odom, who is a
talented player who shows flashes of brilliance but just doesn't have
the stuff to be the best, or even second best, guy on the team. As the
third best guy on the team he is great.

At her best, Wiig seems to be fitted as the third best member of the
SNL cast, somebody who would show flashes of real funny, but would not
have to anchor the show. If the propaganda blitz we have seen the last
6 weeks means that SNL really is relying on Wiig to carry the show
post-Palin, post-Poehler (and I thought Poehler was somehwat
over-hyped) then I think that show is in for some real trouble.

And please, can the next article about funny SNL women at least
mention Jan Hooks? She was funnier than any woman not named Gilda and
prettier than any women not named Tina, and yet she seems to have
become the invisible woman these days.
