I think the real difference is in a maturing of PR principles. Politicians have media consultants and spend time training for media opportunities. Grassroots advocates have media workshops where they can learn how to get stories into the mainstream media's news and how to talk to reporters. And reporters for their part know they're being manipulated and have no response that would change the terms of the conversation.
