Well, if the "Big Brother" franchise didn't turn the trick for Channel
4 this time out, another franchise, the gritty dramedy "Shameless,"
about the proud and profane Manchester working-class family the
Gallaghers, is--its sixth season (a big-for-UK-TV 16-episode order)
premiered last night as an alternative to the 10 p.m. newscasts of the
major terrestrial networks and beat ITV's unsuccessful "News at Ten"
revival, BBC2 ("The Culture Show" and the first half of "NewsNight")
and Channel 5 (a "CSI Original" rerun), only topped by BBC1's "Ten
