I'm not sure why you lost those abilities, unless you were upgrading
from a combo set.  Most HDTV's still have composite and S-Video inputs
for using older devices.

As for a recommendation, you only need a digital tuner if you want to
receive over-the-air programming.   Cable will still be using NTSC SD
channels that work with old equipment, and set-top boxes that output
composite/s-video also don't need a digital decoder.

I've used both Panasonic and Pioneer DVD recorders. My current unit is
a Panny VHS/DVDR, and it works pretty well.  The annoying thing is
that when doing tape-to-DVD dubs, it aborts if it sees Macrovision or
signals that look like it.  I've seen that trigger on some marginal
tapes of mine from the past.
