And since I've been meaning to ask this, were the audience mikes left
on during the Pepsi ads/sketches Saturday night? Back in the first
season, Polaroid did live spots on "SNL" backstage (one of them when
Candace Bergen, who was doing Polaroid commercials back then, was
guest host)--I think they all occurred after Michaels started leaving
the audience mikes on for pre-tapes and film segments and I can't
remember if the audience mikes stayed on during those spots, which had
the Not Ready for Prime Time Players doing some attempts at fooling
around.
According to the first "SNL" book, when NBC forced them to run an
apology for the "Claudine Longet Invitational" sketch, the script had
bolded and underlined over Don Pardo's copy "DO NOT TURN ON AUDIENCE
MIKES WHEN THIS IS BROADCAST!!!"
