In my mind, the Oscars are considered to be "definitive" by many in
spite of the fact that all it takes to be a winner is a plurality of
votes in a small club, most of whose members share similar politcal
outlooks and geographical locations. Anyone who's surprised that the
outcomes would be either about "sending a message" (be it political,
artistic, or commercial) or would be a reflection of those people's
personal outlooks, prejudices, and friendships hasn't been paying
attention (IMHO, anyway).
I didn't see most of the nominated pictures this year (mainly because
the desciption of the subject matter wasn't appealing, I didn't like
the actors involved, or going to the movies is just not a pleasurable
experience any more), so I can't judge who gave a "better" performance
this year, but (in the past, anyway), it's not often that my own
assessments have matched those of Oscar. I'm not saying they're wrong;
I'm just saying the perception of the winners needs some context.
But, of course, as we all know, "in Hollywood, Oscar is king."
