The UK's major commercial TV network, the nation's top-rated network
from the day it started in 1955 until a decade ago when BBC1 bypassed
them and never looked back, is plagued by falling ad revenue,
expensive underused studio facilities outside of London and the
inability to develop game/reality formats that play well overseas
("Hell's Kitchen" was its last hit), not to mention that its current
biggest hit, "L&O UK," is a license from NBCU and Dick Wolf produced
by an indie production house. Its reaction? Cutting jobs and cutting
back on online divisions started too late to make any difference (when
the BBC was becoming an online power in the UK, ITV was just watching
and using their web site as a promo vehicle):
