NEW YORK (UPI) -- U.S. TV journalist Charlie Rose was nearly killed by
a mafia hit man because of a misinformation provided by crooked cops,
a new book alleges.

The book "Friends of the Family" alleges suspected mafia under-boss
Anthony "Gaspipe" Casso sent a hit man to Rose's home thinking the TV
star was prosecutor Charles Rose, the New York Post reported Sunday.

The hired assassin, who left Rose's home without every seeing the
journalist, had been acting on misinformation provided by police
detectives Louis Eppolito and Stephen Caracappa, the book alleges.

"Casso was captured before he could make his move against Rose, but
supposedly he did get an address for the prosecutor in the Hamptons.
One of his people waited at the house for the prosecutor to show up,
but for whatever reason Rose never got there," retired detective Tommy
Dades and prosecutor Michael Vecchione allege in their new book.

Rose, former anchor of the CBS series "Nightwatch," appeared shocked
by the revelation.

"It's a surprise; it's all new to me," he told the Post.
