He was born June 2, 1972, in Rapid City, the son of Jim and Shirley (Johannes) Heald. He grew up in Rapid City and graduated from Stevens High School in 1989. Tom worked with his father as a survey assistant and was a columnist for the Rapid City Weekly. He had been a member of the Senior DeMolay.
