As we approach Mother's Day, my thoughts go out to Mother Heald.
Her appearances in "Remote Control" and in Tom's regular e-missives always
captured the inaneness and stupidity of that business we call TV. (A
Thursday quote -- "Why is 'Saturday Night Live' on tonight?")
She raised a son with a caustic wit that, more often than not, made us laugh
at ourselves more than the supposed target. ("Barney Frank doesn't want to
have sex with you either on REAL TIME WITH BILL MAHER.") His measured
snarkiness stands as a testament to good parental guidance.
I can only guess that Mother Heald smiled, and perhaps chuckled, every time
Tom asked for permission to quote her in one of those interweb letters he
always sent out.
So to the Family Heald, my deepest condolences. From now on, it will be a
little more difficult to laugh, but a little easier to smile and remember.
And to Mother Heald, Happy Mother's Day. You raised two fine boys.
