Uncommonly large roster of surprise guests, drop-ins, and cameos - a
record number? - on last night's episode of "Saturday Night Live,"
hosted by pop singer/songwriter/producer/actor and increasingly
reliable sketch comic Justin Timberlake.

Along with Justin, we saw his sweetie Jessica Biel (whose unbilled and
fantastic Jessica Rabbit impression was a highlight of an earlier ep)
introduce a musical segment featuring Ciara and Timberlake; Susan
Sarandon and Patricia Clarkson as MILFs in a terrific Mother's Day
digital-short sequel to Timberlake and Andy Samberg's "Dick in a Box"
music video; former SNL cast member, fledgling/annoying talk-show
host, and tvornottv whipping boy Jimmy Fallon reunited with Timberlake
for a new edition of their "Barry Gibb Talk Show" skit; and "Star
Trek" stars Chris Pine, Zachery Quinto and Leonard Nimoy on "Weekend
Update" plugging the feature-film reboot of the sci-fi warhorse in
amusing fashion.

Along with the Duane Johnson, Jon Hamm and Anne Hathaway-hosted
affairs, it was one of the few top-notch SNLs of a mediocre season. (I
think of the fall's dynamite political material with Tina Fey's
devastating lampoon of Sarah Palin as something separate from the
standard raft of sketches.) And I'd say that Timberlake is now among
the program's elite hosts - alongside Christopher Walken, Tom Hanks,
Steve Martin and (sorry, Kevin) Alec Baldwin.
