In an interview for Fox Business Network (quelle surprise!), the man who wanted to take the WSJ off of its profitable subscription system (of course, the only profitable paid subscription online news) said that subscription fees are inevitable (includes video):
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/05/28/murdochs-newspaper-predic_n_208821.html Murdoch also predicted that Chicago can't be a two-newspaper town too much longer and that the Sun-Times is as good as dead (he owned the paper in the mid-80s). Right now, both papers' parent companies are in Chapter 11 (although the Tribune Co.'s problems aren't directly related to the Tribune, unlike Sun-Times Media Group)--however, the Trib is still smarting from criticisms that the recent revamp by the people who started the Trib's successful young demo commuter tab the RedEye have "dumbed down" the paper (mostly because of a cut news hole and pushing celeb news on the front pages). Also, the Trib's WGN Radio, one of the last of the old-school AM "full service" good neighbor personality-driven stations, has sent veteran middayers Kathy O'Malley and Judy Markey packing and replaced weekend specialty talk shows with screaming right-wing talkers, seemingly indicating a shift towards becoming another wingnut talk station in an attempt to hold onto the big audience who listens to the Cubs (seemingly the only time anyone under 55 listens to 'GN--never mind that mainline talk radio, like Fixed Noise, is primarily old folks home in the demos). --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ TV or Not TV ....
