Barris missed the mark. Even after the guy fell face first into a
roaring fire on "Survivor," it didn't even phase viewers. We've
watched people kill themselves (or others, or be killed by cops) in
high speed pursuits for years, and not only does it not prevent news
outlets from carrying the car chases live, but programs have been
produced to show the "best" car chases. We are, at any given moment,
20 minutes away from "The Running Man."

And, at the end of the day, talent scouts (casting agents, or whatever
you want to call them) don't care if they find a mentally unstable
person, as long as his or her appearance makes for good television
(admittedly, I know nothing about Ms. Boyle specifically, having never
seen her, listened to her, or taken even a casual interest in her
career... that said, I wish her well). On "Your Big Break" we found
someone who was convinced she was a reincarnated celebrity (despite
the fact she was born at least 25 years before the celebrity in
question had died). We had a guy who was essentially homeless and
socially... um... unique. We had another guy who was convinced his
beard could only be shaved with a straight razor (freaked out about
it, in fact), causing us to span Southern California to find the ONE
GUY who still used the tool from the dark ages. And, though I've
mentioned this point before, it bears repeating, we cast several
people who referred to singing in a karaoke bar as a "gig."

All of these people brought their unique brand of crazy to Studio 1 at
NBC, and we didn't care as long as they made good TV. And that is the
way of things in the business we call show.
