Agreed on all your points. While I loved the content and the host of
this years 64th Annual Tony Awards I cannot believe both the technical
glitches and the directorial failings.

The sound problems, right from the outset and involving the single
most known person scheduled to be on the broadcast (Elton John) were
upsetting on two counts: 1) That they happened up front, pointing to a
lack of preparedness and 2) That they happened continually.

The issue is that this is not some one-off production; the venue is
among the best for live performances anywhere, and they had a full
dress rehearsal at 9:00 AM that day.

Did they know that they had mic problems? Did they experience any
sound mix issues in dress? Did they not know that when Lord Farquar
sings about "growing" that perhaps the feed should be on him and not
the chorus line on stage right? Did no one think to hand Liza the
envelope before she walked out -- knowing full well they were (as
usual) under a time crunch and once back from commercial things would
happen quickly? And what about the guy walking through the live shot
in the background (behind the faux glass of a portico) who did a mid-
course correction so fast that I expected to hear sound effects
normally associated with 'Ricochet Rabbit'.

Certainly not a Tony worthy of an Emmy for any production value
category.
