They have never offered this option, only the choice of using the client
or a webmail interface.

And once you delete a message from either, it's gone.

It must have had to do with way back when they originally introduced this
service as just free e-mail; it was a way to cut costs.

If I do that, he'll loudly complain about how I treat him like a little
kid.

I think he's already figured that out.
