Nitpick, but technically two different series (the J5 series started
in 1971 and ran the typical-for-Saturday-morning-back-then two years
(16 eps the first season, 6 the second) and the Osmonds series only
ran one year first-run, I believe. However, they were both on ABC,
both Rankin/Bass with the same writers, the same animation house in
the UK (instead of Japan), the same soundtrack people on the West
Coast (instead of Canada), same Maury Laws scores, same laugh track
and canned applause (the crazy part of Saturday morning, since prime
time one-camera sitcoms had stopped dubbing in canned applause years
beforehand) and both had Paul Frees doing most of the supporting
voices. And the other difference was that the Osmonds did their own
voices, and obviously the J5 didn't (although the credits had "The
Voices of the Jackson 5" in the larger print, that was only for the
records)--well, "The Osmonds" also had female characters and a woman
voice actor and the J5 didn't.

The J5 show in particular had some surprisingly impressive segments
accompanying the musical numbers, with the animators seemingly allowed
to go in all directions, as long as they included enough stock cycle
animation of the J5 performing.

I will assume that CBS Distribution (owners of the series by way of
ABC Films/Worldvision) will put the J5 series back into circulation to
play off of Jackson's passing, even if it's just on tv.com.
