I am a big fan of Supreme Court Nominee Hearings. I have seen or listened to most of all of them in my lifetime, and all of some of them. Today's opening statements were pretty standard and without much that was notable - we will see if the Republicans can find a way to make some of their pet charges stick (I doubt it), not to derail her confirmation (they can not) but to get anti-Obama traction.
But the highlight (to be honest, even more than the short and safe opening statement by the nominee herself) was the debut of Senator Al Franken. The CNN reporter in the room stated that every senator stopped what they were doing and paid attention to Franken (very rare at these things). I thought Franken was fantastic. He was humble and collegial, but still articulated the real liberal (and here it really is liberal, in the Wellstone sense, not the kind of liberal that republicans use to mean anything to the left of Focus on the Family) position on the constitution and the Supreme Court in clear, understandable, common sense, and persuasive (at least to me, who admittedly sits in the choir on this) terms. Excellent job Al! You were worth the wait! --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ TV or Not TV .... The Smartest (TV) People!
