In a complicated deal, the NY Times and Univision are swapping their
New York FM frequencies, with UNI's WCAA "La Kalle" Spanish Top 40
format moving down to the stronger 96.3 signal and the Times selling
65-year-old classical station WQXR to NPR giant WNYC, who will operate
the station as a non-commercial station at 105.9:

"The Radio Station of The New York Times" had long been a prestige and
image property for the Gray Lady, if not a ratings or revenue magnet--
the Times' financial problems had called on them to sell the station.
WNYC programs classical music at night on its FM station and a 24/7
HD-2 classical station--it had programmed Beethoven during the day,
attracting the ultrahighbrows who didn't like QXR's commercials and
perceived over-reliance on the standard repertoire (another attraction
to NYC was caustic, very political DJ Steve Post), but began
simulcasting its AM station's talk shows during the day after 9/11.
