With the caveat that I haven't watched my DVR recording of last night's "Tonight Show" yet... During the two months when I was responsible for closed-captioning Conan's "Late Night" (January and February 1999), there were cuts in the guest interviews and/or the comedy bits on maybe 10% of those shows -- although I admit it's a small sample size (3-4 out of about 35). They were definitely for time, not for content -- for example, bad language in interviews was "bleeped" with silence, not cut out -- and it was never obvious that they had gone over time during the interviews or comedy bits. I can take a guess about why the edits might have looked bad last night: the associate producers responsible for them are the same people who used to work on "Late Night," but now on "Tonight," they have a lot less time to do them -- roughly 2 hours from the end of the taping until the show airs, rather than 6. -- Jim Ellwanger <[email protected]> <http://www.ellwanger.tv> --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ TV or Not TV ....
