I remember wrapping up the 10pm Sunday news at KCCI one night long ago
and the GM and PD came into the studio clutching bottles of champagne.
Seems they had just seen the ratings and we had put up a 50 share,
which got them all excited. We went to the kitchen set, popped the
bottles, and got pleasantly buzzed before we all drove home. It was a
different time.

We went back to Des Moines a couple of weeks ago for the first time in
20 years and I made a point of catching the news. There was a
handsome, middle-aged anchorman who looked awfully familiar. Then it
hit me that he was Todd Magel, who started at KCCI a year after I did,
except he used to be an innocent, wide-eyed kid who got stuck with all
the grunt work. What happened to him? The next night Kevin Cooney
anchored and he had gray hair! How did these people get so old?

I, of course, have not grown older, despite the fact we were in Des
Moines because my youngest son had an admissions interview at Drake.
He wants to major in Radio-TV for some bizarre reason.
