My recollection of it (and I was watching that evening) was that the Tiller business was the last straw for Olbermann and that he was not going to make any references to either Bill-O or Fox News until they took him off the air. And in watching since (I am a Countdown regular viewer) he has honored that.
I doubt this was forced on Olbermann by the suits and I suspect the Times article, coming weeks after the fact, was based on some kind of "leak"by someone at Fox.
