So, in contrast to my previous post this week about BSD Unix (and Mach) 
origins in the iPhone and ipod Touch,  the Tivo Units are largely based 
on Linux.  However, they compartmentalised some of their proprietary 
stuff and included hardware checking - now called 
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tivoization

However, as you would usually expect, a brilliant programmer (i.e. 
good-hacker  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Tridgell   ) removed a 
hard drive from his tivo and reverse-engineered it to figure out how to 
get it to work is AUS using PAL instead of NTSC.  He also created a 
truckload of tools for tivo hacking.
