Last night, "The Bold and the Beautiful" wins its first Daytime Emmy
for drama series in its 22-year history. As per usual on awards
shows, the production team swoops on stage and the announcer intones
that showrunner and co-creator Bradley Bell will speak for his staff.

Except he didn't.

Before Bell could open his mouth, the former Dick Clark staffers who
produced the show, obviously pressured by The CW to get off the air
right at 10 p.m. ET and not a second later, have cut to the American
Airlines plug, with the audio coming late, and then off to the credits
(100% full-screen and WGN in Chicago didn't do a squeezeback to promo
the 9 p.m. news), with the people on stage who are paying attention
looking befuddled and Bell unable to give his acceptance (or, for that
matter, host Vanessa Williams unable to do a proper signoff). To top
it off, although director Jeff Margolis is not hiding the fact that
the crowd in the Orpheum Theatre in LA is filing out, the canned
applause, whistles and cheers (uncredited, although I suspect it's one
of Bob LaMasney's guys) continued unabated (and this wasn't the first
time that we heard rapturous applause when the audience was on camera
not applauding).

And I thought people who worked for Clark knew how to produce award
shows. And if I were Bradley Bell, I would still be royally pissed
off this morning.
