There was a commercial for AT&T that played in January that involved Pepe Le Pew. In it, he either recieves or sends a text message to the cat with the white stripe on its back, and they're clearly in love.
What no one seems to remember is that THE CAT HATES THE DAMN SKUNK. That was the point of almost every Pepe Le Pew short...that Pepe loves this cat he thinks is a skunk, and the cat abhors Pepe. But now they're somehow in love and sending text messages. I grew up on Bugs Bunny. I loved watching the shorts on Saturday morning, I own the DVDs, and I've always taken shots at the old Disney characters because the WB cartoons had depth and character. Robert Klein made a comment on Late Night with David Lettermen about 20 years ago that the Disney characters we're cute, but the Warner Bros. characters were actually funny, and I've used that quote since the day I read it to describe why I love Warner Bros. and could care less about Mickey, et al. I remember when Space Jam came out that I said to my stepfather that it depressed me because it was just a marketing material...Bugs and the gang were being used to sell Michael Jordan and the appropriate ancillary merchandise that goes with it. And when I saw that commercial, I thought, "They're dead. That no one stepped up and pointed out the fact that this goes against the very base of the characters depresses me to my very soul." And I thought about the fact that Disney doesn't do this: despite the fact it's a conglomerate, someone can stand up and say "We do not do this to these characters." Tweety Bird is just a character to sell girls clothes. Pepe will suddenly date a cat to sell a phone. I hate being so damn idealistic. Sorry for the rant.
