CNN announced this a little while ago too - but was unable to say if
Gibson was staying on full time with ABC News or retiring completely.
I turned to Good Morning America but all they had was Whitney Houston
in full Diva mode, thanking her people and hugging Diane and saying
that she was her best friend. I have been a critic of the Katie-cast,
but I would not blame Katie for feeling like Sawyer's blond hair and
model-looks allow her to get away with murder. If Katie Couric had
worked on Bill Clinton's staff, and was on TV hugging Mariah Carrey
and being called her best friend just as her elevation to the CBS
anchor chair was being announced, she would have been crucified.

This will be an interesting empirical test of Katie's hypothesis that
her ratings suffer because Americans don't want to get their news from
a woman. If that is true, then we will expect the ratings of ABC to go
down, but only of NBC to go up. If ABC stays level or goes up, or if
CBS goes up roughly the same as NBC, then it would be inconsistent
with her hypothesis (though I suppose Katie would then say she had
softened them up for a gal).
