One good thing about the 10:00 pm Leno Show - it succeeded in making the SNL Thursday Update seem sharp, intelligent and cutting edge. It has also become apparent all week that the real gift of the Kanye and Serena episodes was to give comedians some cover - they could make fun of Joe Wilson without seeming partisan by reducing his offense to just another tabloid civility-breaking moment. I guess the TV guys are hoping that when someone burns a cross on the White House lawn it is the same week that Paris Hilton forgets to wear panties again.
Parks and Recreation was like someone threw a cold glass of water in my face. Yes, I must realize now, that show really is just as bad as I thought it was last spring. Can it ever be not-bad? I am not sure. Qunicy Jone's daughter is actually looking better than she ever has but other than that the show was a write-off for me. The Office for me has entered the level of it doesn't matter if it is as good as it used to be or not - I like the characters, I find the rhythms and patterns comforting and soothing, and I will watch it until it is no more. Community was much better than I thought it was going to be - though I thought it was going to be real bad, based on the zillion promos they ran earlier in the summer, so I don't know how good it is. Somehow I missed that John Oliver was going to be a cast member - that is never a bad thing. One vital element of making it not bad last night was limiting C. Chase's screen time. The dirty secret with him is that he is like horseradish - a very little bit goes a very long way. He had more face time in the 15 second promos than he did in the entire episode.
