Leno has stabilized his ratings - again averaging about 5.8M. That
must be somewhat lower than NBC was hoping, but still well within a
very profitable margin. It seems to me that Leno is not winning very
many new viewers over what he got at 11:35 - but those viewers he does
have are fairly reliable.

A look at ratings for network dramas must remind NBC why they went
with the Leno experiment - if they really can book at least 5M viewers
every night at 10:00, they will miss the occasional 9 or 10M show, but
avoid a lot of those real expensive losers. OTOH, the Dave Affair must
have set off at least a yellow light for NBC, as it illustrates the
potential danger in putting so many eggs in one man's basket. Whatever
his faults as TV entertainer, Leno is by all accounts a good guy who
is maybe literally the last person to be caught up in any kind of
scandal - but what would happen to NBC if Leno had a personal or
health problem that required taking him off the air immediately? If
NBC didn't have a back up plan before, I suspect that they started
putting one together Thursday.
