I am a biased reporter of course, but I thought Dave's monologue tonight was both hilarious and expertly done. I don't think there is another comedian who could have pulled off those kinds of jokes in that kind of situation nearly as well. I wasn't sure if even Dave could find the delicate balance between making fun of himself but not making light of (or bragging about) his situation - but he did it. His self interrupted Clinton, Sanford and Spitzer jokes were both funny and exactly the right meta-comment on what watching his show is about right now for his audience.
His desk piece was also spot on, and yet another example of why he is simply the best at communicating to his audience. He admits again to engaging in bad behavior, and apologizes to this staff, makes a distinction between the extortion, which is a crime he is a victim of, and his bad behavior which is now hurting the people close to him, but notes that he still feels it was right to stand up to the blackmailer. When he closes with the line that he he has a lot of work to do at home to try to fix things, the audience does not laugh (unlike last week) - either because this time somebody got to them and told them not to, or just because of their own understanding of what was going on. I like Dave. I have always liked him. I liked him when he was a media darling and I liked him when his show was #1 and I liked him when he was #2 and everybody was saying he was too old and too cranky, and I like him now. I don't excuse him of his failings - but I know I have some pretty big failings myself, and so far I have not heard him do anything that is unforgivable. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ TV or Not TV ....
