Again, my apologies for the tardiness to this.

At breakfast Sunday morning, my stepdad and I discussed the topic of
Sales when it comes to the baby boomers, especially here in Detroit,
and what a big deal his show was. He was absolutely adored here
amongst the boomers. The idea that kids would go home at noon to watch
TV then sprint back to school for the second half of the day sounds
preposterous to me, but was so true!

I mentioned to him that I really am surprised that, given the fact he
worked in NY and LA, there wasn't more made of his death, especially
here in Detroit. He made a great connection point: sometimes, if you
aren't in this narrow sweet spot when it comes to a celebrity death,
it looks totally out of place. For him, it was John Hughes death
earlier in the year, where he was stunned at the difference in
reaction between people who were teens in his prime versus others. And
I guess I'm in the camp that really expected something more to be made
of this than was, despite being teenaged prenatal at the time.

There's one more thing that just pissed me off to no end. Sales died
on Thursday afternoon: plenty of time to pull together something on
WXYZ, the original home of both his shows (he did a show at 11 p.m.
that went against the local news and focused on jazz music to a
delightfully insane level that could never happen now). Air it
Saturday night at 7:30 as a local time killer. Hell, air the damn
thing at noon Monday and cut the "12 minutes of news padded to an
hour" "newscast" down to an hour. Never happened.
