I guess Whedon didn't direct the episode... Fillion did guest star on a couple of Buffy episodes, so there's that. And playing an author, it makes some sense that his character would at least know, if not have, professional jealousy over a successful book series.
As for what Dollhouse fanatics call themselves, I have no idea. But my coat was always more beige than brown.
