It's "Queen for a Day" or "Strike It Rich" (the original Warren Hull
sobfest, not the Joe Garagiola game show that only game show geeks
like me remember) for a new era, basically. There hasn't been a show
like that since the short-lived "The Girl in My Life" back in the 70s,
although the prime time version of "Deal or No Deal" got a lot of
mileage out of sob stories (it seemed like the only contestants they
booked were either sob stories or walking ethnic cliches) and the
short-lived Peter Marshall show "Fantasy" back in 1982 did its share
of tearjerking (along with segments closer to conventional game or
talk shows).
