Calling it the third is indeed a stretch. Neither pilot of Trek aired in the
same cut that was presented to the studios, which I'm assuming was (or is)
common practice, if not universal. "The Cage" - the Hunter pilot - was found
and released in connection with the 20th anniversary back in 1986. It's on the
third season set for the remastered DVDs that came out last year. Bits and
pieces form the nucleus of the two-part episode "The Menagerie"

This version of "Where No Man Has Gone Before" would be the original cut
presented for the studio, which was then edited to fit the hour-long timeslot
and conform to the series regular credit style.

This is about the only Blu-Ray extra I can think of that would tempt me to
knuckle down and by a Blu-Ray player. I tend to think digital copies will
crowd out Blu-Ray over time, unless there's a huge jump in the "only on
Blu-Ray" extras trend. A good DVD player with an upconverter and a decent HDTV
ought to get you close enough in terms of the picture quality. If I'm off base
on this point, I'd love to hear more.

Apparently this one was actually the second one made, after it was
decided to replace Hunter with Shatner but before the one NBC actually
aired... Bill's opening line is different, as is the music (video clip
available)... it'll be included in the upcoming Blu-Ray of the final
TOS season Dec 15th...
