Epix is the new premium channel from Viacom (technically a joint venture with Viacom, Lionsgate and MGM) that is primarily designed to put Showtime out of business (as you know, CBS now owns the channel originally co-created by Viacom). At the beginning of 2009, SHO's contracts with Paramount, Lionsgate and MGM ended as the studios shot for starting the channel this fall. Unfortunately for them, as of now they have only been able to sign up Verizon FIOS as a system, so they're going to the Net to increase distribution and goose cable systems to pick them up with epixhd.com. (SHO has picked up Weinstein Co. and Summit, so they've got both "Twilight" movies, "Inglorious Basterds," "The Reader" and "Nine" in their basket, but their recent movie title cupboard has become bare, so to speak.) Meanwhile, Epix has in its future goodie bag "Up in the Air," "Precious," the new Scorsese film and "GI Joe," off the top of my head. They intend to do original series, as well (and they have a development deal with Black that might come to his own Bill Maher-type show). It could be put that when Sumner Redstone gets in a pissing match with Les Moonves, Internet viewers could be the winners. -- TV or Not TV .... The Smartest (TV) People!
