interesting tidbits on delays to affiliates. when nbc was feeding both sd
and hd simultaneously, the 2 feeds were 3 seconds off. in case of rain-fade
at 30 rock, the feeds would then come from burbank, adding 3 seconds of
delay to the equation. now nbc doesn't feed any sd, but what they did to
'help' affiliates out was to delay everything by 6 seconds to keep both nyc
and burbank on the same delay...great news for stations running automated,
right? wrong! first of all, we had to have the manufacturer of our house
gps clock system to write software for the extended delay from real time.
secondly, for thos nbc affiliates that also broadcast a second network from
the same facility, the automation systems have to be on separate clocks,
which is not a very friendly procedure since most servers used shared
storage and databases. the question asked by every affiliate during
conference calls was 'why don't you just feed the programs 6 seconds early
on your end'. there was never ever an answer given.
