I'm going to answer this on-list for a big reason...this is info everyone needs to know =)
I'm going to use NYC as an example here. In NYC, you'd need a VHF/UHF antenna. (Some markets like Kansas City only need UHF only antennas) In NYC, it's going to be sketchy because 7, 11, and 13 are actually on those VHF channels, everyone else is really on a UHF. (WNBC 4, for example, is on 28. A box will map 28-x to 4-x so you never know the difference, same for WCBS-2/33, WWOR-9/38, and WNYW-5/44) I'd try the cheapie rabbit ears FIRST because if they work, great, if not, return them and go up in size. But they should be UHF/VHF in any case. Check www.tvfool.com for your area and the type of antenna you might need. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Jon Delfin Sent: Sunday, December 27, 2009 9:11 PM To: tvornottv Subject: [TV orNotTV] question for the brain trust Several months ago, I took my government coupon and bought a DTV converter box, "just in case." Now that I see daily newspaper ads telling me that Time Warner's about to lose a whole bunch of channels (maybe) next week, I'm thinking this might be a case. So I guess I should take a walk over to Radio Shack or Best Buy and grab an antenna this week. A very brief bit of online shopping reveals that there's a wide $ range of possibilities. Are TV antennas like stereo cables? By which I mean, the cheap ones work just as well as the expensive ones, and they're counting on the customer not knowing that? Or are there better and worse antennas? Off-list recommendations would be appreciated. Jon -- TV or Not TV .... The Smartest (TV) People!
