His average of 5.3M viewers, 1.6 rating in the demo is a return to his somewhat improved plateau he established since Thanksgiving week (after a really bad November). I thought there was some possibility that after a week of reruns a significant number of his viewers would have broken themselves of the Leno habit - but they did come back. He was up against RR on CBS 2 nights (he lost to both, again), first runs on CBS 2 nights, and a special on CBS 1 night (People's Choice Awards, which I think won the night). He was third or fourth each night (except that he pretty much tied Ugly Betty). He was also up against a lot of college football in the east coast, including the BCS Championship game, which was the most watched program since the Oscars. Even with all the buzz about this show on Thursday he got no bump, actually posting his worst Thursday demo rating ever (that was the night of the BCS Championship). This is pretty much the story of the Jay Leno Show - against weak competition he does around 5.2-5.3 and a 1.6 rating; against regular competition he does around 5.0 and a 1.5. This has got to be about 15-25% worse than NBC had seriously expected him to do. I have read several theories as to why they pulled the trigger this last week - one interesting one is that NBC needed to throw the affiliates a bone to get their support for the Comcast deal. I think one big factor is that they got a financial analysis that showed that the underlying Mantra of the JLP - that it is so cheap to make it is profitable even at very low ratings levels, was not proving to be true. I am not sure if that analysis is limited to the financials of the show itself, or includes an accounting of the shows effect on other day parts in the schedule. I notice that Meet the Press is losing ground to This week, and even the Today Show is starting to lose ground in the early days of the Georgie regime. NBC is just about to face life without Sunday Night Football, and I suppose their tolerance for the Leno crater just reached its breaking point.
