If nothing else, Conan's letter today doomed Jay. Jay can't win. Even if we go back to the way it was and he gets 11:35 for an hour and "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno", he'll be remembered as "the guy who stole The Tonight Show from Conan O'Brien." I don't know if anyone is telling him that. I have heard that Jay toned down his rhetoric tonight versus previous nights. Yes, I know that this is really NBC's fault, but that's not the overly-simplistic story that everyone else will remember.
The other stunning thing that we learned today was the number of people who have Conan's proverbial back. When I read that letter, I felt it was as sincere as you're going to get in this business. And I don't think Conan realized how much of a nerve he would touch with it. I think of Andy Inhatko's rememberance of the audience's reaction to Johnny's appearance on Dave's LA visit upon Johnny's death: "It was came all on its own, isolated from all of the hype and promotion that had surrounded his final Tonight Shows. This applause wasn't a formal and final thank-you, fed by a month of pre-publicity and anticipation. It was genuine as any applause can be when it's generated within LA's airspace. And when it was unleashed...it proved to be literally unstoppable." And that's exactly what that letter turned out to be: a genuine stand on behalf of Conan.
