Leno's comments have become gradually more personally directed at Conan (the other night he he told a joke about Conan bitching about only getting 7 months, and wishing he had gotten that much time. He has also told a few jokes about his show getting canceled when it was in first place, which I only gradually began to realize was a dig at Conan (he is getting canceled from second or third place). Tonight he also had a joke about being responsible for Conan's recent rating spike. I guess just having Kimmel on the show was a dig at Conan, since he was hyping Conan's competition (though of course Leno does have a history with Kimmel going back to the post strike shows). This may be a stretch, but Kimmel also invited Leno to be interviewed on his show tomorrow at midnight, and Leno said "tomorrow at midnight? Oh, that's not a good time for me" - almost as if he was saying he might be doing the Tonight Show tomorrow. Kimmel was pretty funny actually - I especially appreciated how he saved the audience from some lame "ad lib" that Leno seemed to have planned for the end of the bit with his own final riff on the late night wars. But that 10 at 10 bit is still as lame and awkward as the first one I remember with Tom Cruise - and the satellite feed only had to go from Hollywood to Burbank, which is like 5 miles. Clearly, while this kind of started out with Leno trying to make it seem like both he and Conan were getting screwed by the corporate suits, this has gotten personal between him and Conan - perhaps starting with Leno's published interview in the Fall when he volunteered that he would like to have his 11:35 job back.
