I wouldn't be surprised if Leno has known all along that plan B was to send him back to 11:35. It fits with the M. O. of the guy who promised Conan the Tonight Show in 2004 to be so afraid of losing Jay to another network that he promises him he won't be canceled entirely, no matter how badly he stinks up the ratings. I don't think Zucker's thinking about anything more than trying not to be seen as responsible for the beginning of the end of broadcast TV. Ever since it became clear that putting all of NBC's eggs into the hour-long drama basket was a bad idea, he's made a series of increasingly frantic moves to stop the bleeding. First, it was going to be nothing but reality and reruns at 8, then he scrapped that to put Jay on at 10, then yanked him after three and a half months... -- David J. Lynch [email protected]
