Once again, its worth getting a little perspective.  While Conan's ratings
on The Tonight Show were not as good as Jay's had been, there were still
more people (significantly more, from what I can gather quickly on Google)
watching than had been watching Conan at 12:30.  So by that measure he DID
"broaden his appeal", although he may not have done enough of it in those
early weeks/months.
