It is an annoyance called Center Cutting. Get used to it. Most every major show now is broadcast in HD. There's no separate feed *available* for the most part to cable or Satellite so they just take the HD feed and chop the sides off of it.
I'm no fan of center cutting, and frankly its not your local PBS' fault. They're broadcasting stuff as PBS sends it.
